Devakarṇa

Devakarṇa · deva-karṇa, “the one with the ears of a deva”

Devakarṇa is the son of Ārjika, king of the Maunas, dwellers of Himatuṅga. The Pratisarga Parva of the Bhavishya Purāṇa tells that he performed fierce tapas for twelve years on the peak of Gaṅgotragiri, for the growth of the kingdom. Through his tapas Bhagavatī Gaṅgā gave him darśana, and Kubera gave him the rank of maṇḍalīka of the Āryas. He became a king who protected his people and ruled the earth for sixty years. In his line eight kings arose, who did pūjā of the devas. They ruled for two hundred years and went to svargaloka.
