Varuṇa Devas

Varuṇa Deva, “the devas of Varuṇa”

The Varuṇa Devas are twenty-six in number. The Pratisarga Parva of the Bhavishya Purāṇa names them once, in the words of Agni to the brāhmaṇa Anila, who was to become the forty-nine Marudgaṇas.

Pleased with Anila’s ārādhanā, Dhanañjaya-deva said: “You will become the forty-nine Marudgaṇas, and then I will be your friend and fulfil your desire. As Bhagavān Kubera is dear to the twenty-six Varuṇa-devas, so I will be friend to you in your forty-nine forms.”
