Sarpa (Vāstu Devatā)

Sarpa

Sarpa is a devatā of the Vāstu-maṇḍala. Sūta tells the brāhmaṇas that the devatās of the maṇḍala are forty-five, and in the numbered list Sarpa is the thirtieth. He comes after Soma and before Aditi.

The Vāstu-maṇḍala is made in building a house, a devamandira or a great well, and in devapratishṭhā. The devatās are invoked in it and receive pūjā. Their compartments, with those of Śikhī and the others of the forty-five, are coloured with red and other colours.
