Rāmaśarmā
Rāmaśarmā · rāma-śarman, “the one whose joy is Rāma”
Rāmaśarmā is a learned brāhmaṇa of Kāśī, devoted to the pūjā of Bhagavān Śaṅkara. The Pratisarga Parva of the Bhavishya Purāṇa tells that on Śivarātri he kept vigil alone at Avimukteśvara and asked Bhagavān Śiva for one vara: that the devatā in whose dhyāna Bhagavān Śiva stays in samādhi should dwell in his heart. So he became an upāsaka of Bhagavān Rāma. When Kṛshṇacaitanya was twelve years old he became his disciple and pūjaka, and at Kṛshṇacaitanya’s command he composed the Adhyātma Rāmāyaṇa.

The vigil at Avimukteśvara
Sūta tells Śaunaka that in Kāśī lived a learned brāhmaṇa named Rāmaśarmā, devoted to the pūjā of Śaṅkara. At the time of Śivarātri, at the place Avimukteśvara, he kept vigil alone and with dhyāna performed japa of the Śiva Pañcākshara.
Bhagavān Śaṅkara, who does good to the worlds, was pleased and told that best of dvijas to ask a vara. Rāmaśarmā bowed to Bhagavān Śiva and said: “Bhagavān Śiva, may that devatā in whose dhyāna you stay in samādhi dwell in my heart.”
Bhagavān Maheśvara smiled and said: “I ever meditate on and worship Bhagavān Rāma-Lakshmaṇa and Balabhadra. Attain them and be happy.” So saying, Bhagavān Śiva withdrew.
