Purīśarmā

Purīśarmā · purī-śarmā

The Pratisarga Parva of the Bhavishya Purāṇa tells that Ajaikapāda, the son whom Bhagavān Śaṅkara gave from his own aṃśa to Vasuśarmā, a brāhmaṇa and Śiva bhakta of Māhishmatī, and whom Brahmā made lord of the Candra-maṇḍala as the fear-removing Rudra when Sūrya stood in Kumbha, came to Māhishmatīpurī and, as the one who gives purification in Kali, became renowned by the name Purīśarmā, descending as the son of Yatidatta. At sixteen years of age he defeated scholars who were masters of the Veda, came to Śaṅkarācārya and accepted discipleship under him. Sūta gives this to a muni, within the discourse of Bṛhaspati.
