Śāṅkara-bhāshya

Śāṅkara-bhāshya · śāṅkara-bhāshya, “the commentary of Śaṅkara”

The Śāṅkara-bhāshya is the work of Śaṅkara. The Pratisarga Parva of the Bhavishya Purāṇa tells, in Bṛhaspati‘s account, that Vīrabhadra Rudra brought forth a tejas from his own body and sent it to the house of a vipra named Bhairavadatta. In the Kali Yuga that same Bhagavān Śiva descended as his son under the name Śaṅkara.

The boy was full of virtues, knew all the śāstras and was a brahmacārī. He composed the Śāṅkara-bhāshya and established the Śaiva-mata, and he gave the tripuṇḍra, the aksha (rudrāksha) mālā and the Pañcākshara mantra.
