Bhairavadatta
Bhairavadatta · bhairava-datta, “given by Bhairava”
Bhairavadatta is a vipra named in the Pratisarga Parva of the Bhavishya Purāṇa. Bṛhaspati speaks to Devendra, and Sūta then tells a muni that Vīrabhadra Rudra, glad at heart, brought forth a tejas from his own body and sent it to the house of the vipra Bhairavadatta. In the terrible Kali Yuga that same Śiva descended as his son under the name Śaṅkara. The boy was full of virtues, knew all the śāstras and was a brahmacārī. He composed the Śāṅkara-bhāshya, established the Śaiva-mata, and gave the tripuṇḍra, the rudrāksha mālā and the Pañcākshara mantra.
