Kumbhīpāka

Kumbhīpāka · kumbhī-pāka, “the cooking in the pot”

Kumbhīpāka is one of the dreadful narakas. Bhagavān Śrī Kṛshṇa speaks of it twice to Yudhishṭhira in the Uttara Parva of the Bhavishya Purāṇa: once in the ākhyāna of Mudgala Ṛshi, and once in his teaching on the gift of land.

In the ākhyāna of Mudgala

The mahātmā Mudgala Ṛshi, who remembered his past births, once went wandering to Yamaloka. There he saw jīvas burdened with pāpa suffering in Kumbhīpāka and other dreadful narakas, and the terrible dūtas of Yamarāja giving them many kinds of pain. On seeing Mudgala Muni, the pain of the jīvas in naraka ceased, and they were greatly glad.

The one who takes back land

One who gives land to a brāhmaṇa and seizes it again is hung upside down and cooked in the Kumbhīpāka naraka. After a divine thousand years he comes out of Kumbhīpāka, is born on this earth, and suffers many kinds of hardship for seven births. Therefore land should not be seized.
