Yāmya Vyākaraṇa

Yāmya Vyākaraṇa, “the grammar of Yama”

Yāmya Vyākaraṇa is one of the eight vyākaraṇas, the systems of grammar, named in the opening chapter of the Bhavishya Purāṇa. It stands third in the list.

The eight vyākaraṇas

Sumantu Muni tells King Śatānīka that, for the four varṇas to gain the fruit of dharma, artha and kāma, the eighteen Purāṇas and the Rāmāyaṇa have been told, and the wise Vyāsa told the Mahābhārata, which holds the meaning of all the Vedas. Having known the eighteen Purāṇas and the eight vyākaraṇas, Vyāsa Maharshi composed the Bhārata Saṃhitā, which removes brahmahatyā. The eight vyākaraṇas, in order, are:

  1. Brāhma
  2. Aindra
  3. Yāmya
  4. Raudra
  5. Vāyavya
  6. Vāruṇa
  7. Sāvitra
  8. Vaishṇava
