Trivarga Saptamī Prayer

Trivarga Saptamī Prārthanā, “the prayer of the Trivarga Saptamī”

The Trivarga Saptamī Prayer is the prayer to Bhagavān Sūrya as the Paramātmā, “the refuge of those who have no refuge”, that the vratī says with a concentrated mind in the Trivarga Saptamī vrata. Brahmā gives it to Bhagavān Vishṇu in the Brahma Parva of the Bhavishya Purāṇa. Only its meaning is printed.

The setting

Brahmā offers to tell Bhagavān Vishṇu the fasting vratas of Bhagavān Sūrya, by which one fulfils what the mind wishes. On the śukla saptamī of Phālguna the vratī chants the name of Sūrya Deva again and again with bhakti: a hundred and eight times at the pūjā, and on setting out, on rising, on stumbling and on sneezing. He does not speak with pākhaṇḍas, the fallen or the unjust, and worships Bhagavān Sūrya with śraddhā.

The prayer

With his mind fixed on Bhagavān Sūrya, the vratī says:

“O Bhagavān Sūrya, of the form of Paramātmā! You are full of compassion. Be the refuge of those who have no refuge. O Divākara, protect those sunk in the ocean of saṃsāra.”

Having so gained the grace of that Deva of devas, he keeps the fast with a restrained mind. In the forenoon he bathes, worships Sūrya Deva, repeats the mantra that begins “haṃsa haṃsa kṛpālus tva”, and offers three streams of water at Sūrya’s feet.

The three groups of months

  • Phālguna to Jyeshṭha: one who worships Sūrya in these months gains an excellent gati in this world; after death he reaches Sūryaloka and, by the grace of Śiva, enjoys the splendours of Indra.
  • Āshāḍha to Āśvayuja: he praises Sūrya as Mārtāṇḍa, takes gomūtra, becomes wealthy and reaches Kuberaloka; remembering Bhāskara at the time of leaving the body, he gains Sūryaloka.
  • The four months from Kārttika: he takes milk and praises Sūrya as Bhāskara; one who remembers Bhāskara at his last moment reaches Bhāskaraloka.

Each month he gives brāhmaṇas the gifts they ask. At the close he has a Purāṇa recited and the songs and kathās of Bhāskara performed, honours the reader, and performs a śrāddha.

The phala

By the first pāraṇa a person gains cows, land, wealth, lordship and enjoyments; by the second he reaches Sūryaloka. A woman who keeps the śukla saptamī vrata with bhakti gains the same threefold good gati as a man. For those who keep the saptamī for Sūrya pūjā, and for those who read or hear this, all pāpas and fears fall away, and this tithi gives the fruits of dharma, artha and kāma.
