Sūrya Sahasranāma
Sūrya Sahasranāma, “the thousand names of Sūrya”
The Sūrya Sahasranāma is the praise of Bhagavān Sūrya by his thousand names. In the Brahma Parva of the Bhavishya Purāṇa, Sāmba tells Vasishṭha Maharshi that he praised Sūrya with it and that Sūrya gave him darśana in person and healed him. The names themselves are not given in this chapter.
Sāmba’s words to Vasishṭha
Śaṅkha Muni tells a dvija what Sāmba once told Vasishṭha. Sāmba came to the āśrama of Vasishṭha and bowed at his feet. Vasishṭha, greatly pleased, asked him how the kushṭha (skin disease) that had cracked his whole body had gone, and how he now shone with such beauty, good fortune and tenderness. Sāmba answered: “I praised Divākara, the lord of the worlds, with his sahasranāma. Swāmī, that Devadeva gave me darśana in person.” Vasishṭha asked by what vrata, tapas and gifts Sūrya had blessed him, and Sāmba began to tell him in full the rule of worship by which Sūrya became gracious to him, beginning with the śāpa of Durvāsa Maharshi that had brought the disease upon him.
