Vakula

Vakula

Grammar: masculine noun; the name of a tree.

Meaning: a tree, one of the great trees of the Naimisha forest.

In the scriptures: the Brahma Purāṇa opens with Naimishāraṇya, most puṇya, a holy land, supremely beautiful and crowded with munis. Its great trees are named in order: sarala, koṇḍagogu, panasa (jackfruit), dhava, caṇḍra, mango, jambū, the wood-apple, the banyan, devadāru, aśvattha, pārijāta, candana (sandal), agaru, pāṭala, vakula, saptaparṇa, punnāga, surapoṇṇa, nāgakesara, śāla, tāla (palmyra), tamāla, nārikela (coconut), arjuna and others, with campaka and other creepers. There the munis had begun a twelve-year satra, and there Lomaharshaṇa the Sūta came to them and told the Purāṇa (Brahma Purāṇa, Chapter 1).
