Trisuparṇa

Trisuparṇa · tri-suparṇa, “the three suparṇa mantras”

Grammar: neuter noun; a compound of tri (three) and suparṇa. The Brahma Purāṇa’s Telugu prints it trisuvarṇa.

Meaning: the mantras called trisuparṇa, recited at śrāddha.

In the scriptures: in the Brahma Purāṇa, Vyāsa tells the munis how Bhagavān Vishṇu, as Varāha-mūrti, lifted the pitṛs out of the waters of the Kokā river with his tusk and performed the first śrāddha for them. After the homa, he fed the brāhmaṇas, added ghee and honey with a mantra, and recited “Pṛthivī” and the Ṛgveda mantra “Madhu vātā”. After the brāhmaṇas had eaten, he did japa of five mantras beginning with the ṛk “yat te”, and also of the trimadhu and trisuvarṇa mantras, the Bṛhadāraṇyaka, the Saukara-sūkta and the Purusha-sūkta, which are to be recited (Brahma Purāṇa, Chapter 219).
