Sannipāta

Sannipāta · sam-nipāta, “falling together”

Grammar: masculine noun, from sam (together) and nipāta (a falling down), from the root pat (to fall): “a falling together”.

Meaning: in Āyurveda, the disorder in which all three doshas, vāta, pitta and kapha, are aggravated together; the fever and the diseases born of it.

In the scriptures: the Agni Purāṇa names sannipāta in a stotra, in its law and in its care of horses.

In the Apāmārjana. In the Kuśāpāmārjana, the rite of wiping away affliction with kuśa grass, the stotra prays: “O Govinda! Quickly quieten the fevers and remove the pains they cause”: the fever arising from the three doshas, the fever from sannipāta, the āgantuka fever (from an outside cause), the aikāhika, dvyāhika, tryāhika and cāturthika fevers, and the unceasing fever. It prays again: “May the diseases born of vāta, pitta and kapha, those born of sannipāta, the āgantuka diseases, lūtā (spider-poison), visphoṭa (eruptive boils) and the rest go away by the mere saṅkīrtana (chanting) of the name of Bhagavān Vāsudeva. May all those diseases perish by the mere uttering of the name of Śrī Mahāvishṇu” (Agni Purāṇa, Chapter 31).

In the law. In the rules of vyavahāra (law), a transaction carried out by one intoxicated, one maddened by a disorder of vāta, pitta and kapha, by sannipāta or by possession by a graha, one afflicted by disease, one grieving, a minor, or one in fear of enemies is asiddha, invalid; so too is a case carried on by those who have no connection with the matter (Agni Purāṇa, Chapter 253).

In the care of horses. Śālihotra tells Suśruta that dūrvā removes pitta, and a horse that eats dūrvā gets no diseases of vāta, pitta and kapha, nor the diseases of sannipāta (Agni Purāṇa, Chapter 289).

In the Bhavishya Purāṇa: the word stands in the teaching on serpents. Yamadūtī, the fourth poison fang, has no remedy, and the food named for its bite is the food given in sannipāta (Brahma Parva, Chapter 33). Of the nature of poison, the darvīkaras are vāta, the maṇḍalins pitta, the rājilas śleshma and the vyantaras sannipāta (Brahma Parva, Chapter 36).
