Markaṭī
Markaṭī · markaṭī, “a plant, bracketed केंवाच”
Grammar: feminine noun; the text brackets it केंवाच.
Meaning: a plant whose planting is warned against; also a female monkey.
In the scriptures: the Madhyama Parva says that the planting of markaṭī and kadama brings the decline of offspring (Bhavishya Purāṇa, Madhyama Parva, Bhāga 1, Chapters 10–11). The word, as a female monkey, also stands in the printed heading of the Kukkuṭa-Markaṭī vrata, the Muktābharaṇa Saptamī, in which Queen Candramukhī, who forgot her vrata, was born as a vānarī (Bhavishya Purāṇa, Uttara Parva, Chapter 46).
