Kalinda

Kalinda

Grammar: noun.

Meaning: a fruit.

In the scriptures: The Pratisarga Parva of the Bhavishya Purāṇa tells, through Bṛhaspati‘s words to Indra, that Kali came into a garden, picked fine fruits and, bowing with joined palms, asked the vipra Prāṃśuśarman to eat the kalinda fruit with him. Prāṃśuśarman smiled and replied that the learned have said Kali lives on the Baheḍā tree and in the kalinda fruit, so he would not eat it. If it was given with faith and bhakti, he could accept it only after offering it to Bhagavān Śālagrāma. Hearing this, Kali was ashamed and lost hope, and the brāhmaṇa took the fruit (Bhavishya Purāṇa, Pratisarga Parva, Khaṇḍa 4, Chapter 8).
