Bṛhadratha (Father of Jarāsandha)

Bṛhadratha · bṛhat-ratha, “the one with the great chariot”

Bṛhadratha is the father of Jarāsandha. Indra gave him the divine chariot of King Yayāti, and from him it passed to Jarāsandha. He is not Bṛhadratha the son of Sarasvān.

The chariot of Yayāti

Devendra, pleased with Yayāti, gave him a divine armlet and a golden chariot yoked with divine white horses swift as the mind. With that chariot, named Saṃvartavasu, Yayāti conquered the whole circle of the earth in six days and subdued the devas and dānavas. The chariot passed to the Kauravas, and vanished from Janamejaya, son of Parīkshit, by the śāpa of Garga. That divine chariot of Yayāti then fell to the king of Cedi. Indra, pleased, brought it and gave it to Bṛhadratha. From Bṛhadratha it passed to his son Jarāsandha, and when Bhīma killed Jarāsandha he offered the chariot to Vāsudeva.
