Bakula
Bakula
Grammar: masculine noun.
Meaning: a tree with a fragrant flower; the Telugu of the text gives pogaḍa.
In the scriptures: the Brahma Parva of the Bhavishya Purāṇa, on the marks of women, says that a mouth with the fragrance of jasmine, bakula, lotus or blue water-lily never lacks drink, food and tāmbūla (Bhavishya Purāṇa, Brahma Parva, Chapter 5). The Madhyama Parva names sāla, khaira, palāsa, kesara, bela and bakula as trees whose yūpas (pillars) are praised in Kaliyuga, and says that planting Bakula destroys pāpa (Bhavishya Purāṇa, Madhyama Parva, Bhāga 1, Chapters 10–11).
