Anasūyā (Ātma-guṇa)

Anasūyā · an-asūyā, “freedom from envy”

Grammar: feminine noun; an (without) and asūyā (envy).

Meaning: freedom from envy, the first of the eight ātma-guṇas (virtues of the ātmā).

In the scriptures: the Brahma Parva names eight ātma-guṇas: Anasūyā, Dayā, Kshamā, Anāyāsa, Maṅgala, Akārpaṇya, Śauca and Aspṛhā. It explains Anasūyā as not speaking ill of the virtues of a virtuous person, not praising one’s own virtues and not delighting in the faults of others (Bhavishya Purāṇa, Brahma Parva, Chapter 2).
