Hari Vaṃśa Purāṇa’s Vishṇu Parva
Hari Vaṃśa Vishṇu Parva, “the book of Vishṇu”
The Vishṇu Parva (The Section on Vishṇu) is the central and longest of the three major Parvas (sections or books) that make up the Hari Vaṃśa Purāṇa, and the richest in bhakti. The Hari Vaṃśa is the celebrated Khila-Bhāga (supplementary section) added to the great itihāsa, the Mahābhārata. The Hari Vaṃśa Parva before it lays the cosmic and genealogical foundation. The Vishṇu Parva is given wholly to the narrative of the Pūrṇa Avatāra (Complete Incarnation) of Bhagavān Vishṇu, Śrī Kṛshṇa. It tells of Kṛshṇa’s wondrous birth, His charming Bāla-Līlās (childhood sports) in Vṛndāvana, and His heroic deeds as a youth, up to the destruction of the tyrant king Kaṃsa and the founding of the Yādava capital at Dvārakā. This Parva is a foundational text for Kṛshṇa Bhakti (devotion to Kṛshṇa) in the thought of Bhārata.
Significance
The Vishṇu Parva is of great religious and cultural importance: it shows Kṛshṇa, the advisor of the Mahābhārata, as the beloved divine child and complete avatāra.
- Biographical Authority: It gives the earliest long, ordered and dedicated life of Bhagavān Kṛshṇa outside the main itihāsa, which makes it a primary scriptural source.
- Theology of Līlā: It unfolds the idea of Līlā (divine sports), in which the Supreme Being meets humanity in a playful and close way, and so deepens the path of Bhakti (devotion).
- Source of Well-known Narratives: This section contains full, detailed accounts of many well-known narratives of Kṛshṇa, such as the defeat of the serpent Kāliya and the protection of the cowherds in the Govardhana Līlā (lifting of the Govardhana hill).
Narrator and Audience
The narrative authority of the Vishṇu Parva follows the traditional frame of the itihāsa, which keeps the accounts holy and true:
- The Prime Narrator: The text is mainly narrated by Vaiśampāyana (the disciple of Vyāsa), who tells it to King Janamejaya, and so joins the divine life directly to the line of the Mahābhārata.
- The Authoritative Source: As the central part of the Hari Vaṃśa Purāṇa, its content comes from the wide knowledge gathered by Veda Vyāsa.
Structure
The Vishṇu Parva is laid out in order of time and theme, following the stages of Kṛshṇa’s life and the showings of His divinity in each:
- Birth and Transfer: The circumstances of Kṛshṇa’s birth to Devakī and Vasudeva in Mathurā, and how he was carried at once to the safe haven of Gokula to be raised by Nanda and Yaśodā.
- Bāla-Līlās and Encounters with Asuras: Narratives of the wondrous and heroic defeat of many Asuras sent by Kaṃsa.
- Vṛndāvana and the Gopīs: Narratives of Kṛshṇa’s life with the Gopas (cowherds) and Gopīs (cowherd maidens), including the Rāsa Līlā (divine dance).
- Mathurā and the Founding of Dvārakā: The last struggle with Kaṃsa and the founding of Kṛshṇa’s sovereign capital on the western coast.
Contents
The Birth and Childhood in Gokula
The Parva tells of the descent of Vishṇu to the earthly realm as the son of Vasudeva and Devakī, while Balarāma is born as the son of Rohiṇī. The section narrates the exchange of Kṛshṇa for Yogamāyā (divine māyā) and Kaṃsa’s failed attempts to kill the divine infant. The Bāla-Līlās (childhood sports) describe Kṛshṇa’s wondrous deeds:
- Defeating the Asuras: These include the destruction of Pūtanā (the rākshasī) who tried to nurse Kṛshṇa with poisoned milk, Tṛṇāvarta (the whirlwind asura) and Śakaṭāsura (the cart asura).
The Divine Sports in Vṛndāvana
The narratives move to Kṛshṇa’s youth and his role as protector of the cowherd community.
- Kāliya Dāmana: The famous episode in which Kṛshṇa subdues the venomous serpent Kāliya in the Yamunā river, purifies the waters and shows His mastery over nature.
- Govardhana Līlā: The section tells how Kṛshṇa chose to turn the pūjā from Indra (the king of the devas) to the Govardhana mountain. When Indra strikes back with a fierce storm, Kṛshṇa lifts the mountain on His little finger to shelter the community, showing His full control over the cosmos.
- Rāsa Līlā: Accounts of the Rāsa Maṇḍala (circle of dance) with the Gopīs, a symbol of the loving union of the jīva (the living being) with the Paramātmā (Supreme Soul).
The Rise of Dvārakā
The Parva brings the Yādava narrative up to the events of the Mahābhārata:
- Slaying of Kaṃsa: Kṛshṇa and Balarāma return to Mathurā, where Kṛshṇa fearlessly defeats the wicked king Kaṃsa and restores the throne to the rightful Yādava heir.
- Founding of Dvārakā: Because of the constant attacks of the enemy king Jarāsandha, Kṛshṇa builds a new, fortified capital, Dvārakā, on the western coast, and readies the Yādavas to become the leading power in Bhārata Varsha (India).
Phala Śruti (Fruits of Recitation)
The devoted study of the Vishṇu Parva brings the highest spiritual rewards of devotion to Bhagavān Kṛshṇa.
- Purification from Pāpa: Listening to the deeds and Līlās of Kṛshṇa at once cleanses the bhakta of all gathered Pāpa (sin), even that of the gravest offences.
- Achievement of Vaikuṇṭha: The highest promise is reaching Vishṇu Loka (Vaikuṇṭha), the eternal abode of Bhagavān Vishṇu, which assures the bhakta of Moksha (liberation).
- Ideal Progeny: The recitation of the Vishṇu Parva is held to bless bhaktas with a life of prosperity (Artha) and the birth of virtuous children like Kṛshṇa (Santāna).
Place of the Vishṇu Parva
The Vishṇu Parva has its own place through its focused narrative and its position in the work:
- The Vishṇu Parva and the Bhāgavata Purāṇa: The Vishṇu Parva gives a concise and martial account of Kṛshṇa’s life, stressing His heroic deeds and the restoration of Dharma. The Bhāgavata Purāṇa, a later text, gives the Līlās deep philosophical and emotional meaning.
- The Vishṇu Parva and the Hari Vaṃśa Parva (First Section): The first section, the Hari Vaṃśa Parva, is made up of genealogy and cosmology. The Vishṇu Parva brings this setting to life, centring on the personal divine form and His direct dealings with the human world.
- Focus on Avatāra: It is one of the fullest texts on the life of the Avatāra before the events of the Mahābhārata, and it fills a gap that the main itihāsa leaves open.
Chapters
The 134 chapters of the Vishṇu Parva cover the complete Kṛshṇa-līlā from the Kaṃsa-Nārada dialogue through Kṛshṇa’s birth, childhood at Vṛndāvana, Kaṃsa-vadha, the Jarāsaṃdha wars, Kālayavana-vadha, the founding of Dvārakā, Rukmiṇī-vivāha, Naraka-vadha, Pārijāta-haraṇa, the Pradyumna-Māyāvatī episode, the Vajranābha war, the Bāṇāsura-Aniruddha-Ushā episode, and the concluding Dvārakā festival.
Overview of the chapters
The Vishṇu Parva is the second and largest parva of the Hari Vaṃśa Purāṇa. It continues the narrative from precisely where the Hari Vaṃśa Parva ends — with the divine plan for Kṛshṇa’s descent already set in motion — and narrates the complete Kṛshṇa-carita from birth to the Ushā-Aniruddha marriage. The parva is notable for the Āryā Stotra to Yoganidrā-Devī (Ch. 3), the Govinda-abhisheka by Indra (Ch. 20), the Rāsa-Līlā (Ch. 21), Akrūra’s Nāgaloka vision (Ch. 27), the Hariharātmaka resolution of the Kṛshṇa-Śiva war (Chs. 126–128), and the Āhnika Stotra (Ch. 111).
