Sūrya Kalpa
Sūrya Kalpa, “the rite of Sūrya”
The Sūrya Kalpa is the name Śrī Kṛshṇa gives to the rule of the Saptamī vrata of Bhagavān Sūrya that he teaches his son Sāmba. He tells Sāmba to keep it hidden, for by its grace Sūrya stays near.
Śrī Kṛshṇa’s words to Sāmba
In the Brahma Parva of the Bhavishya Purāṇa, Sumantu tells Śatānīka the dialogue of Śrī Kṛshṇa and Sāmba. Having given the year’s Saptamī vrata and its fruit, Śrī Kṛshṇa says:
- Long ago, in the first kalpa, Sūrya Deva himself told him of this auspicious vrata, and he has always kept it secret.
- If Sāmba desires the highest fruit, he should worship Sūrya quickly by this method with a pure mind.
- By Sūrya’s prasāda alone Śrī Kṛshṇa gained thousands of sons, conquered the rākshasas and brought all the devatās under his control.
- Sāmba too should keep this Sūrya Kalpa hidden; by its grace Sūrya Bhagavān stays near.
- Sūrya dwells ever in Śrī Kṛshṇa’s divine cakra; if Sūrya with his thousand rays did not preside over it, it could not be so radiant.
- Śrī Kṛshṇa himself daily does japa, pūjā and dhyāna of Sūrya Deva as far as he is able.
