Aviyoga Vāpī

Aviyoga Vāpī is a sacred tank (kuṇḍa) at Pushkara. It is a place for pitṛ rites and śrāddha, the offerings made for the departed ancestors. It was here that Rāma, during his forest exile, did the śrāddha for his father Daśaratha.

A place for śrāddha

The Aviyoga Vāpī is a kuṇḍa at Pushkara linked with pitṛ-tarpaṇa (water offerings to the ancestors) and śrāddha. The name Aviyoga means “non-separation”. Pushkara as a whole is among the most powerful tīrthas for pitṛ-karma (rites for the ancestors), and the Aviyoga Vāpī is a particular kuṇḍa within it known for this purpose.

Rāma’s śrāddha for Daśaratha

Rāma visited Pushkara in the time of his forest exile. The great ṛshi Mārkaṇḍeya guided him to the Aviyoga Vāpī as the right place to do the śrāddha for his father Daśaratha, who had lately died. Rāma did the śrāddha here with full śraddhā (faith) and all the prescribed rites.

Sītā’s vision

While the śrāddha was being done, Sītā saw Daśaratha. She saw him rising to higher worlds. The vision showed that the offering had reached him and had helped him rise.
