Jaṭhara (Mountain)

Jaṭhara

Jaṭhara is one of the maryādā (boundary) mountains around Meru. With Devakūṭa it extends north and south from the Nīla mountain to the Nishadha.

Among the boundary mountains

The teller of the Brahma Purāṇa, describing the bhuvana-kośa to the munis, tells that Mālyavanta and Gandhamādana stretch from the Nīla to the Nishadha, with Meru between them like the pericarp within a lotus, and that beyond the maryādā mountain, up to Lokāloka, the Bhāratas, Ketumālas, Bhadrāśvas and the Kuru lands are like its petals. Jaṭhara and Devakūṭa are two maryādā mountains; they extend north and south from the Nīla to the Nishadha. Gandhamādana and Kailāsa extend east and west and enter the ocean; Nishadha and Pāriyātra stand on the western side of Meru; and Triśṛṅga and Jārudhi are varsha mountains of the north, lying in the middle of the ocean. Two by two, the maryādā mountains stand on Meru’s four sides as its jaṭhara (womb) parts.
