Mahāvatī

Mahāvatī · mahāvatī, “the great city”

Mahāvatī is a city built by Māyādevī. The Pratisarga Parva of the Bhavishya Purāṇa tells that in it the aṃśa of Śrī Kṛshṇa was to arise as Udayasiṃha, the son of Deśarāja, and that Śāradā Devī gave it to King Rāshṭrapāla, and that later kings ruled there.

The aṃśa of Śrī Kṛshṇa

Bhagavān Śrī Kṛshṇa said: “In the city named Mahāvatī, built by Māyādevī, my aṃśa will arise as the son of Deśarāja, called Udayasiṃha. He will be born from the womb of Devakī.” The text glosses Udayasiṃha as Ūdala. His account is told at Ālhā and Udal.

Hearing the stuti of Kali, Bhagavān Śrī Kṛshṇa smiled and said: “Kalirāja, for your protection I shall descend as an aṃśa in Mahāvatī.”

Rāshṭrapāla and Śāradā Devī

Rāshṭrapāla left his ancestral seat and worshipped Śāradā Devī, giver of all auspiciousness, and gained Vaishṇavī śakti. Pleased with his tapas, Śāradā Devī gave him the most delightful city named Mahāvatī, protected by Maṇideva. The wise King Rāshṭrapāla ruled ten years in that city.

The later kings

Mighty Kalivarmā went to Rāshṭradeśa, conquered its king and ruled happily in the midst of the delightful city named Mahāvatī. His son was Dhṛtivarmā, and Dhṛtivarmā’s son was Mahīpati. When all the kshatriya kings of the Candravaṃśa had been killed at Kurukshetra, Mahīpati became king of Mahāvatī, and he ruled twenty years.
