Kalikātāpurī

Kalikātāpurī · kalikātā-purī, “the city of Kalikātā”

Kalikātāpurī is a city which the text glosses as Kalakattā. The Pratisarga Parva of the Bhavishya Purāṇa tells that Bhagavatī Kālī, pleased with King Kālivarmā, brought it forth from the buds of many flowers.

How the city arose

Kālivarmā was the son of Bhogavarmā. He worshipped Mahākālī with bhakti. Pleased with him, Bhagavatī Kālī came herself to grant a vara. She made buds of many flowers, and from them a lovely city arose, famous on earth by the name Kalikātā Purī.
