Cyavana (Ṛshi of the Svārocisha Manvantara)
Cyavana
Cyavana has other meanings too: see all meanings of Cyavana.
Cyavana is one of the ṛshis of the Svārocisha manvantara, the age of Svārocisha Manu, the second of the Manus. The Brahma Purāṇa names him in its telling of the manvantaras, with Urva, Stamba, Kaśyapa, Prāṇa, Bṛhaspati, Datta and Atri.
The ṛshis of the Svārocisha manvantara
In Chapter 5, the Manvantara-kīrtana (“the telling of the manvantaras”), the munis ask Lomaharshaṇa how many Manus there are, what their times are and what happened in each. The Sūta answers that the history of the manvantaras cannot be told in full even in a thousand years, so he tells it in brief: for each Manu, the saptarshis (the seven ṛshis of that age), the line of sons and grandsons, and the groups of devas.
Of the second manvantara he says that in the time of Svāroci Manu the ṛshis were Urva, Stamba, Kaśyapa, Prāṇa, Bṛhaspati, Datta, Atri and Cyavana. Cyavana is the last named. The devas of that age were the Tushitas, “the seven devas of great vows”, and the sons of the Manu were Havighna, Sukṛti, Jyoti, Āpa, Mūrti, Pratīta, Nabhasya, Nabhas and Ūrjas.
