Divyā, Wife of Bhṛgu

Divyā

Divyā was the wife of Bhṛgu Maharshi, who lived at the beginning of the Satya Yuga. The Uttara Parva of the Bhavishya Purāṇa tells of her in the account of Bhṛgu’s śāpa. She was a great pativratā, the grace of the āśrama, always busy with the work of the house, and obedient to Maharshi Bhṛgu, who was very pleased with her.

Bhṛgu’s tapas

In a devāsura war great fear came upon the asuras from Bhagavān Vishṇu, and they came to Maharshi Bhṛgu for refuge. Bhṛgu handed his agnihotra and other duties to his wife and went to the northern part of the Himālaya to perform tapas, to gain the Sañjīvanī Vidyā by worshipping Bhagavān Śaṅkara and to make the daitya king Bali victorious always.

Divyā and the cakra

At this very time Bhagavān Vishṇu came there, riding the divine vāhana Garuḍa, and in a moment destroyed the daityas. Divyā rose to pronounce a śāpa on Bhagavān Vishṇu. Just as the śāpa was about to leave her mouth, Bhagavān Vishṇu severed her head with the Sudarśana cakra.

Just then Bhṛgu Muni arrived, having gained the Sañjīvanī Vidyā, and saw that all the daityas were slain and that the brāhmaṇī also had been slain. Blind with anger, Bhṛgu pronounced a śāpa on Bhagavān Vishṇu: “You will take birth ten times in the world of men.”
