Kāminī

Kāminī

Kāminī is the wife of a brāhmaṇa who lived in the kingdom of King Vikramāditya. Sūta tells the ṛshis of her in the Pratisarga Parva of the Bhavishya Purāṇa, in the māhātmya of the Śrī Durgāsaptaśatī. Once the brāhmaṇa had gone elsewhere to recite the Saptaśatī, and Kāminī, whose acts matched her name, took to blameworthy acts in his absence. A son was born to her, Vyādhakarmā. The brāhmaṇa drove them both from the house. Mother and son went to a nishāda they knew and lived there, still gathering wealth by bad acts, and Vyādhakarmā took to theft. By chance Vyādhakarmā later heard the recitation of the Durgāpāṭha at a temple of the Devī, became the disciple of the vipra reciting it, and by japa of the Devī’s mantra became an excellent dvija, free of pāpa.
