Āryāvatī
Āryāvatī
Āryāvatī is the wife of the brāhmaṇa Kāśyapa. The Pratisarga Parva of the Bhavishya Purāṇa tells of her twice, in Sūta’s words to Śaunaka.
When a thousand years of Kali had passed, the brāhmaṇa Kāśyapa came from svargaloka to Brahmāvarta by command of the devas. His dharma-patnī was Āryāvatī, and from her Kāśyapa had ten sons: Upādhyāya, Dīkshita, Pāṭhaka, Śukla, Miśra, Agnihotrī, Dvivedī, Trivedī, Pāṇḍya and Caturvedī. Their qualities matched their names (Pratisarga Parva, Khaṇḍa 1, Chapter 6).
In the account of the Śukla line, Devarāṭ Mahendra sent the brāhmaṇa Kāśyapa to Brahmāvarta, and Āryāvatī, a deva-śakti, joyfully took his hand in marriage. Ten sons were born of her (Pratisarga Parva, Khaṇḍa 4, Chapter 3).
