Vīra (son of Śatarūpā)

Vīra · vīra, “the hero”

Vīra is a son of Śatarūpā by Vairāja, Svāyambhuva Manu, at the beginning of creation. His brothers were Priyavrata and Uttānapāda. To Vīra, Kāmyā was born, and Kāmyā had four sons.

His family

In the Brahma Purāṇa the Sūta tells the munis of the first creation. When the Prajāpati had created the prajās (beings), he obtained Śatarūpā as his wife. She was ayonijā, not born of a womb, and came forth by the greatness of Āpava and by dharma. For ten thousand years she performed hard tapas, and she obtained as her husband Svāyambhuva Manu, radiant with tapas, whose life-span of seventy-one mahāyugas is called a manvantara.

From that Vairāja, Śatarūpā bore a son, Vīra, and also Priyavrata and Uttānapāda. To Vīra, Kāmyā was born, and Kāmyā had four sons:

  1. Samrāṭ
  2. Kukshi
  3. Virāṭ
  4. Prabhu
