Sumati (Son of Sāvarṇi Manu)

Sumati · su-mati, “the one of good understanding”

Sumati is one of the sons of Sāvarṇi Manu, the Manu of one of the manvantaras still to come.

The Sāvarṇi manvantara

The Sūta Lomaharshaṇa, telling the munis of the manvantaras, speaks of those to come. In the time of Sāvarṇi Manu the seven ṛshis will be Rāma, Vyāsa, Aśvatthāmā, Ajara, Śaradvān, Gālava and Aurva.

The sons of Sāvarṇi Manu are Vairi, Adhvarīvān, Śamana, Dhṛtimān, Vasu, Arishṭa, Adhṛshṭa, Vāji and Sumati. The Sūta says that one who wakes at dawn and praises these names gains happiness and prosperity, gains fame, and is blessed with long life and good fortune.
