Cedi Yuvarāja

Cedi Yuvarāja, simply known as Chedi Yuvaraja, Sanskrit: चेदि युवराज, Telugu: చేది యువరాజు, Hindi: चेदि युवराज.

The Cedi Yuvarāja was the crown prince of the Cedi kingdom. He fought on the Pāṇḍava side at Kurukshetra. Aśvatthāmā killed him on the fifteenth day of the war. The Droṇa Parva gives his complexion as like the petals of a blue lotus (nīlakamala-kānti) and says that Aśvatthāmā killed him together with his entire retinue.

Who he was

The Droṇa Parva names this warrior only by his title and country. It calls him “cedi deśa yuvarāja”, the crown prince of the Cedi kingdom. It does not give his own name. He fought on the Pāṇḍava side, because the Cedi kingdom was among the allies of the Pāṇḍavas at Kurukshetra.

His death

Aśvatthāmā killed the Cedi Yuvarāja in the fierce fighting of the fifteenth day. At that time Aśvatthāmā was driven by the death of his father. He had also had partial success with the Nārāyaṇāstra (the weapon of Bhagavān Nārāyaṇa). He was cutting through the Pāṇḍava ranks with great destructive force. The Droṇa Parva describes the Cedi Yuvarāja as having a complexion like the petals of a nīlakamala (blue lotus). Aśvatthāmā killed him together with all the forces that accompanied him.

His death is named together with those of Sudarśana of Mālava and Vṛddhakshatra of Paurava. These killings are part of what made the last phase of the fifteenth day so costly for the Pāṇḍava army. After them even Dhṛshṭadyumna, Sātyaki and Bhīmasena had to retreat, and Arjuna himself was in great distress.
