Bhūri, Son of Somadatta

Bhūri was a prince of the Kuru house. He was a son of Somadatta and a brother of the well-known Bhūriśravas. He fought in the great war. In the closing Svargārohaṇa Parva of the Mahābhārata he is named among the great souls who returned to the Viśvedevas when their earthly karma was used up.

A prince of the Kuru line

Bhūri belonged to the senior branch of the Kuru house. As a son of Somadatta, he was a kinsman of both the Kauravas and the Pāṇḍavas. His brother Bhūriśravas was one of the most honoured warriors and scholars of his time. Bhūri stood with the Kaurava army in the Kurukshetra war and gave his life on the battlefield.

Return to the Viśvedevas

In the Svargārohaṇa Parva, Sauti names Bhūri among the great ātmās (souls) who entered the Viśvedevas when their karma was spent. They were taken back into that group of devas, together with his brother Bhūriśravas and the other Kuru, Yādava and allied heroes.
