Bhūri (Kaurava Warrior)

Bhūri, simply known as Bhuri, Sanskrit: भूरि, Telugu: భూరి, Hindi: भूरि.

Bhūri was a Kaurava warrior in the Droṇa Parva part of the Kurukshetra war. Sātyaki killed him with a śakti (a thrown spear-weapon). He is a different person from Bhūriśravas, the son of Somadatta.

Who he was

Bhūri is named separately from Bhūriśravas, though both names belong to the same Kuru-Bāhlīka clan. Bhūriśravas was a mahāratha (great chariot-warrior) of the highest rank. He is described at length in the Bhīshma Parva and the Droṇa Parva. Bhūri is less often described. His death is recorded at a different point in the Droṇa Parva.

His death

In the Droṇa Parva battles Sātyaki killed Bhūri with a śakti. This happened during Sātyaki’s long and fierce advance through the Kaurava ranks. In close order he fought Kṛtavarman, the Trigarta warriors, Jalasandha, Somadatta and others.

The death of Bhūri by Sātyaki’s śakti is a separate act from the killing of Bhūriśravas. That came later and in different circumstances. Arjuna cut off the arm of Bhūriśravas, and then Sātyaki cut off his head while he sat in a vow.

Two warriors named Bhūri

The Mahābhārata has two warriors in the Kuru-Bāhlīka line whose names begin with Bhūri.

  1. Bhūriśravas, son of Somadatta and grandson of Bāhlīka. He was a mahāratha of the first rank. Sātyaki killed him after Arjuna cut off his arm (Droṇa Parva, Chapters 143–144).
  2. Bhūri, a separate warrior of the same line, killed by Sātyaki with a śakti in Droṇa Parva, Chapter 166.
