Piṅgalā, Wife of the Aśvins

Piṅgalā, “the tawny one”

Piṅgalā is the śakti of Bhagavān Sūrya and the younger wife of the Aśvinīkumāras. The Pratisarga Parva of the Bhavishya Purāṇa tells that the Aśvinīkumāras defeated Sāvarṇi and Śani, bound them and brought them to their father. Pleased, Bhagavān Sūrya said to them that Iḍā Devī, the śakti of Soma, would be their elder wife and Piṅgalā their younger wife. Of the two brothers, one would be Iḍāpati and the other Piṅgalāpati.

Bhagavān Sūrya also said that Sāvarṇi standing in the second place from a person’s rāśi would cause delusion, and that ārādhanā of Piṅgalāpati would then give śānti. Devī Tapantī standing in the janma-rāśi would cause burning, and then Iḍā and Piṅgalā would give śānti.
