Jvālāmālinī

Jvālāmālinī · jvālā-mālinī, “she who is garlanded with flames”

Jvālāmālinī, “she who is garlanded with flames”, is a devī, a Bhagavatī, named in the Agni Purāṇa. Parameśvara names her among the śaktis worshipped on the yoga-pīṭha (the seat of worship), and Agni Deva teaches her mantra twice: in it she is Bhagavatī Jvālāmālinī, surrounded by hosts of vultures, the protector of all that moves and all that does not move. One who does japa (repetition) of her mantra in battle, or on going to battle, gains victory.

Among the śaktis of the yoga-pīṭha

After the Trikhaṇḍī mantra and the mantras of the Bhairava-śikhā, Parameśvara gives the śaktis who are worshipped in order on the yoga-pīṭha, several of them with their letters: Śaśinī, Bhāvanī, Pāvanī, Śivā, Gāndhārī, Piṇḍākshī, Ajarā, Kumārī, Kālarātrī, Saṅkaṭā, Kālikā, Śivā, Bhavaghorā, Bībhatsā, Vidyutā, Viśvambharā, Śaṃsinī and the others. With the letter da comes Jvālāmālinī, and after her Karālī, Durjayā, Raṅgī, Vāmā, Jyeshṭhā, Raudrī, Kālī and the rest of the śaktis.

Her mantra for victory in battle

In the chapter on the pūjā of Lakshmī and the other devīs, Agni Deva first teaches the Jaya-Durgā mantra, recited at the start of battle with the dhyāna of Raṇacaṇḍī. Then he says that in battle one should do japa of this mantra, and victory is gained:

ओं नमो भगवति ज्वालामालिनि गृध्रगणपरिवृते चराचररक्षिणि स्वाहा
oṃ namo bhagavati jvālāmālini gṛdhra-gaṇa-parivṛte carācara-rakshiṇi svāhā
Oṃ, salutation to Bhagavatī Jvālāmālinī, who is surrounded by hosts of vultures, the protector of the moving and the unmoving. Svāhā.

Among the many mantras that Agni Deva teaches after the pūjā of Vināyaka, he gives her mantra again, in a shorter form. One who goes to battle doing japa of it gains victory (jaya):

ओं नमो भगवति ज्वालामालिनि गृध्रगणपरिवृते स्वाहा
oṃ namo bhagavati jvālāmālini gṛdhra-gaṇa-parivṛte svāhā
Oṃ, salutation to Bhagavatī Jvālāmālinī, who is surrounded by hosts of vultures. Svāhā.
