Jalamātṛkā
Jalamātṛkā · jala-mātṛkā, “the Mātṛ devīs of the water”
The Jalamātṛkās are the Mātṛ devīs of the water, the protectors of the jalāśaya (a body of water). The Madhyama Parva of the Bhavishya Purāṇa names them in the rite for a tank, which Sūta tells the brāhmaṇas.
The pūjā
In the middle of the water of the tank, one says “जलमातृभ्यो नमः” (jalamātṛbhyo namaḥ) and worships the Jalamātṛkās, praying to them: “Mātṛkā Devīs! This water has been released by me for the satisfaction of moving and unmoving beings of the three lokas. May this water be a joy to the world. Protect this jalāśaya.”
