Susheṇa of Śūrasena
Susheṇa was the king of the Śūrasena realm. This is the kingdom centred on Mathurā, also called Śūrasenadeśa. It is the sacred land of the Yādavas and the birthplace of Bhagavān Kṛshṇa.
The Vivāha Kāṇḍa of the Ānanda Rāmāyaṇa names him as one of the kings at the svayaṃvara (the ceremony in which a princess chooses her own husband) of Campikā at Vaṭapura.
At Campikā’s svayaṃvara
Susheṇa was the ruling king of Śūrasena in the time of Rāma-rājya, the rule of Rāma. Bhūrikīrti Mahārāja arranged Campikā’s svayaṃvara at Vaṭapura. The kings gathered there were described one by one by the dādi Nanda. She spoke of Susheṇa as a noble and brave candidate.
Campikā chose Kuśa and placed her māla (garland) on him. The other kings, Susheṇa among them, were passed over with respect.
