Śrutāyu
Śrutāyu was a warrior on the Kaurava side in the war at Kurukshetra. His name appears in the account of the battle in the Bhīshma Parva. On Day 7 he fought Yudhishṭhira. On Day 9 he stood in the rear part of the Sarvatobhadra-Vyūha.
He is a different person from Śrutāyudha of Kaliṅga, although the names are close.
Who he is
Śrutāyu appears in the Bhīshma Parva on several days of the battle. Śrutāyudha of Kaliṅga was the Kaliṅga commander who came with sixty thousand chariots. Śrutāyu has no Kaliṅga title, and he appears in other places in the account.
In the war
On Day 7, Śrutāyu fought Yudhishṭhira, the eldest of the Pāṇḍavas, face to face.
On Day 9, the Kauravas formed the Sarvatobhadra-Vyūha. A vyūha is a battle formation, and this one is the formation that is good on all sides. It is made to hold in every direction at the same time. Śrutāyu was placed in the rear section of this formation. On that day the Pāṇḍava forces pressed hard.
