Puṇḍarīka the Merchant
Puṇḍarīka was a merchant (vaṇija) in the Uttara Khaṇḍa of the Padma Mahā Purāṇa. He was a man of dharma and he loved Bhagavān Vishṇu deeply. Out of love for him, Bhagavān Vishṇu came and lived in his house for a full month.
Background
Puṇḍarīka was a householder, not a renunciate and not a ṛshi (seer). He shows how strong bhakti (loving devotion) can be in the life of a merchant. His love for Bhagavān Vishṇu was so complete and pure that it moved Bhagavān Vishṇu himself. The Padma Mahā Purāṇa tells this in Uttara Khaṇḍa, Chapter 218.
Vishṇu lives in his house
Bhagavān Vishṇu was so drawn by Puṇḍarīka’s devotion that he came down and lived in Puṇḍarīka’s home for a full month. The Purāṇa presents this as an extraordinary event. It was not only a dream-vision or a short darśana (sight of Bhagavān Vishṇu). Bhagavān Vishṇu truly dwelt in the home made holy by a devotee’s love. In that month Puṇḍarīka served Bhagavān Vishṇu with all the hospitality and love he had. This is told in Chapter 218.
Bhārata’s death at Pushkara
The account is joined to the story of Bhārata, a kinsman of Puṇḍarīka. Bhārata died at the Pushkara tīrtha (holy place of pilgrimage) and was liberated. The māhātmya (glory) of Pushkara is that death there gives moksha (liberation). Bhārata’s death there is set within the story of Puṇḍarīka’s life of devotion. This is told in Chapter 219.
What the story shows
Puṇḍarīka’s story is one of the clearest examples in the Uttara Khaṇḍa of the bhakti teaching that deep and pure devotion draws Bhagavān Vishṇu into the devotee’s life.
