Taptamudrā: The Vaishṇava Disc Marking

Taptamudrā means “heated mark”. It is the Vaishṇava practice of marking the body with heated emblems of Vishṇu’s divine weapons, mainly the Sudarśana cakra (disc) and the śaṅkha (conch). The marks are placed at the top of the arms, near the shoulders.

In the Uttara Khaṇḍa of the Padma Mahā Purāṇa, Śiva describes this mark to Pārvatī as an essential part of Vaishṇava life, required especially of brāhmaṇas. The disc mark is said to burn away the impurity that comes from contact with unholy people. Brāhmaṇas who bear these marks are called “great brāhmaṇas”, while those without them are called ordinary.

Śiva’s Teaching to Pārvatī

In the Padma Purāṇa’s own telling, Śiva is the foremost devotee of Vishṇu, and the whole Uttara Khaṇḍa is told by Śiva to Pārvatī. Here Śiva teaches Pārvatī about the marks of Vishṇu. He describes sixteen kinds of Vaishṇava devotion. Among them, bearing the marks of Vishṇu’s emblems on the body stands out as one of the most important outward signs of being a Vaishṇava.

The Marks and Where They Go

The main marks are:

  1. Cakra (the Sudarśana disc): pressed on the right arm
  2. Śaṅkha (the conch): pressed on the left arm

Both marks are placed at the top of the arms, near the shoulders. They are made with heated metal stamps carrying each emblem. The Purāṇa declares that the heated marks of the disc and the conch “burn the stream of pāpa due to contact with ordinary persons.”

Importance for Brāhmaṇas

The Purāṇa puts special weight on the duty of brāhmaṇas. A brāhmaṇa who has gone through the five purifying rites, including being marked with the heated Vaishṇava emblems, is called a great brāhmaṇa. Brāhmaṇas marked with the disc are described as “good and extraordinary”, and those without the disc marks as “ordinary and vicious”.

The five purifications for a brāhmaṇa are:

  1. The heated marks
  2. The ūrdhvapuṇḍra (the vertical Vaishṇava mark on the forehead)
  3. The chief mantra, the ashṭāksharī (eight-syllable mantra)
  4. Proper pūjā of Vishṇu
  5. Devotion to Vishṇu’s devotees
