Saṃyogīkaraṇa Vrata
The Saṃyogīkaraṇa Vrata (“vrata for bringing together”) is a nine-day vrata, or sacred observance, that Vālmīki Ṛshi gave to Sītā while she lived at his āśrama (forest hermitage), so that she would be reunited with Śrī Rāma. It is based on reciting a sacred text over nine days, adding one more recitation each day. It is counted among the special vratas linked with the grace of Bhagavān Rāma, which bring devotees who have been separated back to their beloved Prabhu Śrī Rāma.
The account is told in the Janma Kāṇḍa of the Ānanda Rāmāyaṇa, a Sanskrit retelling of the life of Śrī Rāma. The closing phalaśruti (statement of the fruits of hearing a text) of the Janma Kāṇḍa recommends the same method, starting with one recitation on the first day, two on the second, and so on, for anyone who wishes for reunion, the birth of a son or the fulfilment of their goals.
Vālmīki Gives the Vrata
After Sītā was sent away, she lived for years at Vālmīki’s āśrama. Vālmīki saw how she longed to be with Rāma again, and how faithfully she kept the dharma of a pativratā (a devoted wife) while he was absent. Out of compassion, and as a ṛshi who could see the future, Vālmīki gave Sītā the Saṃyogīkaraṇa Vrata as the means by which the reunion that dharma required would be set in motion spiritually.
The vrata is described as a navadina vrata (nine-day observance) based on reciting a sacred text about Rāma, namely the Janma Kāṇḍa itself or a text linked with it. Because the number of recitations grows by one each day, focus and devotion build up steadily across the nine days.

The devotee recites with a calm and steady mind (svasthacittamu), raising the count each day. The complete vrata is the full forty-five recitations across the nine days.
Phalaśruti: The Fruits of the Vrata
The closing phalaśruti of the Janma Kāṇḍa (Chapter 9) recommends this nine-day growing recitation of the Janma Kāṇḍa as the practical form of the Saṃyogīkaraṇa Vrata. It declares:
- Those who recite the Janma Kāṇḍa will not suffer separation from their sons or grandchildren.
- Women who hear or recite the Janma Kāṇḍa will never be separated from their husbands, but will live with them as Lakshmī lives with Vishṇu.
- Those whose family members have gone to distant places and not come back may recite the Janma Kāṇḍa to bring them home.
- Those who recite it daily will see their wished-for works completed quickly.
- Those who perform the nine-day growing recitation will certainly have their works fulfilled, without fail.
- One who reads it for a full year will gain a son even if they had been childless. The putra-kāmī (one who wants a son) gains a son, the dhana-kāmī (one who wants wealth) gains wealth, and the kāma-kāmī (one who longs for love) gains the one they desire.
