Gāruḍī Vidyā

Gāruḍī Vidyā (“the knowledge of Garuḍa”) is a body of sacred knowledge. Bhagavān Viṣṇu gave it to Garuḍa, his eagle mount, and Garuḍa passed it on to Kaśyapa Maharṣi. It gives the power to undo poison, to bring the dead back to life and to overcome the power of serpents.

The Garuḍa Mahā Purāṇa describes the maṇḍalas (sacred diagrams) of the five elements that form the base of this knowledge. It also describes Garuḍa’s virāṭ-rūpa, his vast universal form, in which his body stretches across all the lokas (worlds), from Pātāla up to the abode of Śiva.

Where the Knowledge Came From

Bhagavān Viṣṇu gave the Gāruḍī Vidyā to Garuḍa as part of the boon that empowered Garuḍa to compose the collection of the Garuḍa Purāṇa. When Garuḍa passed this Purāṇa on to Kaśyapa Maharṣi, Kaśyapa gained the Gāruḍī Vidyā along with it. Through it he was able to bring a burnt tree back to life. Garuḍa himself used this knowledge to restore many beings to life.

The power of this knowledge over poison, and above all over snake venom, comes from Garuḍa’s nature as the eternal enemy and conqueror of the nāgas (serpent beings).

The Maṇḍalas of the Five Elements

The Gāruḍī Vidyā is built around five maṇḍalas, one for each of the pañcabhūtas (five elements). Each has its own shape, colour, presiding deity and nāgas:

Jala (water)Lotus or circleBlueVaruṇa
Agni (fire)TriangleColour of flameAgni
Vāyu (wind)CircleDark, smoke-colouredVāyu

The Eight Great Nāgas in the Maṇḍalas

The eight great serpent kings (aṣṭa-mahānāgas) are placed in the element maṇḍalas in pairs. They stand for the serpent powers that the Gāruḍī Vidyā takes in and rises above:

Pair of nāgasMaṇḍala
Vāsuki and ŚaṅkhapālaPṛthvī (earth) maṇḍala
Karkoṭaka and PadmanābhaJala (water) maṇḍala
Kulika and TakṣakaAgni (fire) maṇḍala
Mahāpadma and PadmaVāyu (wind) maṇḍala

Each pair of nāgas rules a different element. One who practises the Gāruḍī Vidyā gains power over all the serpent kings by mastering the five maṇḍalas.

Garuḍa’s Universal Form

The Garuḍa Purāṇa describes Garuḍa’s virāṭ-rūpa, the universal form in which his body holds the whole universe:

  • Feet: set in Pātāla (the lowest realm)
  • Wings: stretching out to cover all the lokas in every direction
  • Vakṣas (chest): carries the seven svargas (heavenly worlds)
  • Kaṇṭha (throat and neck): holds the whole Brahmāṇḍa (the egg of the universe)
  • Mastaka (head): at the eight directions, the top of all space
  • Śikhā (crest or tuft of hair): where Śiva himself lives with his three śaktis (powers)

This universal form shows that Garuḍa is not only Viṣṇu’s vāhana (mount). He is a great principle of the universe: the force of the divine will and the speed of consciousness that runs through and holds up all creation.

The Knowledge in Practice

As a living tradition, the Gāruḍī Vidyā includes:

  • Mantras for making snake venom and other poisons harmless
  • Maṇḍala rituals using the five element diagrams
  • Nyāsa (ritual placing) of the names of the great nāgas on the body for protection
  • Calling on Garuḍa’s form as a protective kavaca (armour of mantras)

The knowledge is connected with the Viṣṇumaṇḍala Pūjā and with the wider tradition of kavaca-stotras, in which the avatāras of Viṣṇu protect particular areas of life.
