Vaikhānasa

Vaikhānasa

Grammar: masculine noun.

Meaning: one of those named with the bhikshus, snātakas and brahmacārīs who serve at the Purushottama-kshetra.

In the scriptures: in the Brahma Purāṇa, Brahmā tells the munis how King Indradyumna came to the Purushottama-kshetra and saw its lovely regions and rivers, its vipras full of the Veda, its women singing with bhakti, and the sound of conches and dundubhis night and day. Those who serve there as the retinue of the Svāmī are bhikshus, vaikhānasas, snātakas, brahmacārīs, siddhas, and the mantra-siddhas, rasa-siddhas, ghaṭikā-siddhas and pādukā-siddhas. Seeing this divine kshetra, the king rejoiced: “Truly this is the kshetra I held in my mind. This is Purushottama” (Brahma Purāṇa, Chapter 46).
