Prayer to Satyeśa

Prayer to Satyeśa · satya-īśa prārthanā, “the prayer to the master of truth”

The prayer to Satyeśa is the two-verse prayer with which the vratī honours Bhagavān Satyeśa, Vishṇu, together with Satyā, Lakshmī, in the vrata told in Chapter 146 of the Uttara Parva of the Bhavishya Purāṇa. Vasishṭha says that Brahmā told its phala.

The setting

The image is set on a golden lotus resting on a kumbha filled with milk. On the pericarp of the lotus the eight śaktis of the Devādhideva are worshipped, and then Bhagavān Satyeśa and Satyā are worshipped with the upacāras beginning with pādya. Then the vratī prays.

The prayer

कृष्ण कृष्ण प्रभो राम राम कृष्ण विभो हरे।
त्राहि मां सर्वदुःखेभ्यो रमया सह माधव ।।

kṛshṇa kṛshṇa prabho rāma rāma kṛshṇa vibho hare|
trāhi māṃ sarvaduḥkhebhyo ramayā saha mādhava ||

Kṛshṇa, Kṛshṇa, the Master; Rāma, Rāma, Kṛshṇa, Vibhu, Hari: save me from all sorrows, Mādhava, together with Ramā.

The second verse, from the words: “This pūjā is given by me, Pitāmaha, Jagadguru. Accept it, Jagadīśāna, Nārāyaṇa; namaḥ to you.” The Hindi gives no meaning for these verses.

The names, in order: Kṛshṇa Prabhu, Rāma, Vibhu, Hari, Mādhava, Pitāmaha, Jagadguru, Jagadīśāna and Nārāyaṇa.

The phala

After the prayer one gives dāna to a brāhmaṇa as one is able; the vrata is kept in both pakshas, and at the end of the year the image is given to the brāhmaṇa. The phala, which Vasishṭha says Brahmā told: endless fruit; a koṭi times the fruit of study of all the Vedas and of travel to all the tīrthas; wealth, grain, sons, grandsons, friends, vidyā and health in this world; dharma, artha, kāma and moksha; and the pāpas of one who reads or hears it go.
