Darśa · darśa, “the sight of the new moon”

Cāturmāsya has other meanings too: see all meanings of Cāturmāsya.

Grammar: masculine noun.

Meaning: the yajña of the new moon, kept with its pair, the Paurṇamāsa of the full moon.

In the scriptures: the Brahma Parva of the Bhavishya Purāṇa names Darśa among the seven Havir-yajñas of the saṃskāras, by which, with the rest of the forty-eight, a brāhmaṇa gains brahmatva (Bhavishya Purāṇa, Brahma Parva, Chapter 2). The four pāka-yajñas, given as pitṛ-karma, havana, bali and vaiśvadeva, are like the vidhi-yajñas such as Darśa and Paurṇamāsa; and all these together do not equal even the sixteenth part of the japa-yajña (Bhavishya Purāṇa, Brahma Parva, Chapter 4).
