Nalinī-sāgara

Nalinī-sāgara · nalinī-sāgara, “the lotus lake”

Nalinī-sāgara is the lake where Princess Bhānumatī bathed. In the Pratisarga Parva of the Bhavishya Purāṇa, Sūta tells what Devaguru Bṛhaspati said to Indra at Prayāga of the glory of Bhagavān Sūrya.

At the end of Tretā Yuga, King Parīkshit ruled in Siṃhala-dvīpa. His only daughter Bhānumatī was devoted to the Sūrya vrata. Each day in the palace she worshipped Bhagavān Sūrya and offered him bhoga, and, pleased with her bhakti, Bhagavān Sūrya came every midday and accepted her naivedya. One Sunday Bhānumatī went to the Nalinī-sāgara to bathe and entered the water. At that moment Nārada Muni came to that lonely place and made known his wish to marry her. The girl said it was improper. Devarshi Nārada was ashamed and was seized by disease, and he went to Bhagavān Śaṅkara, who worshipped Bhagavān Sūrya to remove it. Bhagavān Sūrya appeared and made the Devarshi’s body free of disease and beautiful.
