Śishiṇā

Śishiṇā

Śishiṇā is a land at the border of the Himālaya. Sūta tells Śaunaka in the Pratisarga Parva of the Bhavishya Purāṇa that it came into view as dry ground after the great flood, and that Nyūha, the bhakta of Vishṇu, settled there with his descendants.

After the flood

Bhagavān Vishṇu warned Nyūha in a dream of the coming pralaya, and Nyūha built a great boat and climbed aboard with his descendants. For forty days the clouds poured rain, the four oceans joined and the earth went under. Only the Badarī-kshetra of the Himālaya stayed above the water, and there the eighty-eight thousand munis stayed safe; Nyūha came there with his boat and was saved. The munis offered stuti to Vishṇu-māyā, and the Devī, pleased, stilled the rising of the water.

When the water withdrew in one year, the land named Śishiṇā, at the border of the Himālaya, came into view as dry ground. Nyūha came to that land with his descendants and settled there.
