Daṇḍa has other meanings too: see all meanings of Daṇḍa.

The Mahādaṇḍa is the great staff, the divine weapon of Daṇḍa. The Brahma Parva of the Bhavishya Purāṇa tells, in Brahmā‘s words to Rudra, that Daṇḍa, whose weapon it is, and the other lords of the great gaṇas were appointed by Rudra to stand at the sides of Bhagavān Sūrya. In the same list Rudra himself appoints Mahādaṇḍāyudha, “he whose weapon is the great staff”, a lord of a great gaṇa, able to restrain well; the text does not say whether he is Daṇḍa.
