Vibhāvarī, Wife of Svaroci
Vibhāvarī is a celestial princess of the sky who overcame a heavy burden to find a new path as a queen for Svaroci and a mother of Svarocisha Manu.
A Disastrous Trip to the Holy Lake
Vibhāvarī was born as the daughter of a powerful vidyādhara named Mandāra. She spent her time flying and playing with her best friends, Manoramā and Kalāvatī. One day, the three friends went to a beautiful lake on the sacred Kailāsa mountain. While they were there, they saw a muni who looked very thin and tired because of his long years of tapas. When Manoramā laughed at the muni, he became very angry and cursed her. Vibhāvarī and her other friend tried to defend Manoramā by saying mean things to the muni, which was a big mistake. The muni became even more furious and cursed Vibhāvarī to suffer from a painful skin disease called kuṣṭha-roga.
The Hero with the Healing Touch
For a long time, Vibhāvarī lived in pain on the Mandara mountain because of the muni’s curse. She felt very sad and lost all her beauty until Svaroci arrived with her friend Manoramā. Svaroci had studied the science of āyurveda and knew exactly how to help. He gathered special plants and made a healing juice called auṣadhi rasa to treat her body. As soon as he applied the medicine, the disease vanished, and Vibhāvarī became healthy again. Her skin began to glow with such a bright tejas that she lit up the entire mountainside.
A Gift to Understand the Animal World
Vibhāvarī was so thankful to Svaroci for saving her that she wanted to give him something very special in return. She shared a secret vidyā (knowledge) that gave Svaroci the ability to understand exactly what every animal and bird was saying. Because of this gift from Vibhāvarī, Svaroci could later hear the advice and lessons given by the creatures in the forest.
A New City and a Brave Son
After she was healed, Vibhāvarī married Svaroci in a grand ceremony where the devas played music and the apsaras danced. She lived a happy life of pleasures with her husband on the beautiful mountain peaks. Eventually, she gave birth to a strong son named Merunandana. Svaroci used his magical powers to build a magnificent city just for her and her son. This city was called Nandavatī, and it was built in the north with high walls to keep everyone safe.
